Why Water?
For people in developing countries, clean water changes everything.
Water is the most basic of all human necessities.
It makes all other progress possible, yet almost 1 billion people worldwide currently lack access to safe, clean drinking water. Each day, women and children walk miles to collect water that is so filthy, it will eventually kill members of their family.
It doesn’t have to be this way.
Family Humanitarian can provide lifetime access to clean water for only about $2 per person. When this most basic necessity is met, families are capable of progressing in other areas — it is likely the most dramatic impact you can ever have at such a low cost! When you provide clean water, you provide families with:
Health
Polluted drinking water claims more lives than all forms of violence combined, including war.
Access to clean water can save about 16,000 lives each week! Almost 50% of deaths are children under five years old.
Time
Women and children spend more than 200 million hours/day collecting water.
Access to clean water gives communities more time to grow food, earn an income, and go to school — all of which fight poverty.
Education
Clean water keeps kids in school – especially girls.
Less time collecting water and less sick time means more time in class. Clean water at school means girls don’t have to stay at home one week every month.
Empowered Women
Responsibility for collecting water falls mostly on women.
Women are responsible for 72% of water collected in Sub-Saharan Africa. When a community gets water, women and girls get their lives back and take charge of their own futures.
Safety
Clean water saves more from human trafficking through prevention than we ever can through rescue.
When girls don’t have to walk long distances on dark and desolate roads, the threat of being kidnapped diminishes. When lives are improved, hope is restored, despair leaves, and families are no longer willing to sell their own children.
Hope
Clean water is a basic human need and access to it can transform lives.
It provides hope by improving health, freeing up time for education and economic activities, and creating a foundation for a brighter future!
